If you’re an audio enthusiast, you’re likely aware of Sonos and its reputation for producing high-quality wireless audio and home theater equipment. The company has gained popularity for its speakers, known for delivering exceptional sound quality, ease of use, and compatibility with a range of music streaming services. In this article, we will review the Sonos Sub Mini, a compact, wireless subwoofer designed exclusively for use with the Sonos streaming system. We will cover everything from its features, specifications, and sound quality, to who it is recommended for.
What is the Sonos Sub Mini?
The Sonos Sub Mini is a compact, wireless subwoofer designed with the Sonos streaming system. It is the more affordable version of the previous Sonos Sub, which was priced at $799. Although the Sub Mini is not exactly cheap with its $429 price tag, it is a more economical solution for those wanting to enhance their Sonos sound system with a subwoofer.
The subwoofer contains two 6-inch circular woofers, which are positioned opposite each other, unlike its predecessor’s drivers. This is an intelligent design choice because the Sub Mini is a light construction. If the two 6-inch woofers were to push the air in one direction, it would likely bounce off the floor.
Features and Specifications
The Sub Mini can be paired with supported Sonos speakers, and if used with newer S2 devices, we can access features such as Sonos Voice and dozens of supported music services. It is an excellent addition to an existing Sonos sound system, providing the missing bass to complement the other speakers. In addition, the compact size of the Sub Mini makes it easy to place in any room without taking up too much space.
For our test, we had a Sonos Ray and two Sonos Ones at our disposal, so we were able to test the sub with the help of two Ones as stereo system support and as a home theater subwoofer. In the stereo system, we used the Spotigy service within the Sonos app, and the music was very pleasing as a result. Listening to music like Deep House rumbled as it should, and classical music like Tchaikovsky’s swan lake provided an excellent background and atmosphere. However, it seemed underpowered when we switched to home theater mode. The chest-rattling depth we expected from a home theater subwoofer was missing from the Sub Mini. The size limits the amount of sound it can produce, and we were trying to fill a 400 sqft room with the Sub Mini, which was noticeably insufficient.
Who is it Recommended for?
The Sub Mini is recommended for anyone who is a Sonos owner because it can complement these speakers through the Sonos app by providing the missing bass. Alternatively, if you have built-in IKEA lamps with speakers, this is also a good choice, allowing us to create a truly wireless home audio system. One of the advantages of Sonos is that it saves us the cost of an amplifier and source and the hassle of connecting cables to the speakers. If someone wants to create a new audio system in their home, it is worth considering this wireless alternative.
